There is no doubt that long, flowing hair is in, but many people who desire to have long hair are unable to achieve the right look no matter how long they let their hair grow. For this reason, many turn to hair extensions to get that look they’ve always dreamed of. Whether their hair is sparse and thin or ethnic and curly, many have found that they can have long hair through hair extension.

There are two major types of hair extension: strands and wefts. Strands use techniques that apply 20 to 50 strands of synthetic or natural hair to your own hair by weaving, heat fusing, gluing, clamping, or using waxes and polymers. Hair extension wefts, on the other hand, use wefts of hair that are sewn into a small braid of your own hair that has been put across your scalp for the purpose of hair extension.

With both types of hair extension you can achieve dramatic results. You can thicken and lengthen your hair instantly. And the hair extensions can be matched up perfectly to your own hair. With hair extensions, you shampoo, style and do everything that you would normally do to your own hair. If you want to change colors, you can. If you want to perm, you can. (There may be some restrictions with certain types of synthetic hair extension).

As with all salon services, there is some upkeep associated with hair extensions. The cost and frequency of your upkeep appointments will depend largely on what type of extensions that you purchase. The amount of damage to your natural hair and longevity of your hair extension will also be determined by which type of hair extensions you choose.

” Strands. This type of hair extension causes the most damage to your natural hair because the technique always involves attaching the extensions to your natural hair shaft by chemical means. As you can imagine by the name of some of the application methods used such as heat fusing and gluing, the damage can be substantial. While the strand hair extension does not cost as much as other procedures, there is a good deal of upkeep. These hair extensions normally have to be completely re-done every few months. And because these types of extensions cause so much damage to your hair shaft, they are not a good option for allowing your natural hair to grow out while you wear the extensions.

” Wefts. Weft hair extensions are by far the best types of hair extensions. The weft itself looks like a curtain of hair attached together at the top and free flowing at the bottom. These hair extensions are attached to your head by sewing them into a tiny braid made out of your own hair. The effects achieved with this technique are very natural and no one can see the braids or wefts of hair unless you show them. Since hair growth will push your braids off of your scalp, in order to keep this type of hair extension looking fresh, you need to return to your stylist every 6 to 8 weeks to have your wefts taken out and put back in close against your scalp.

So, if you always wanted long hair but have never been able to accomplish it, maybe hair extensions are just what you need. But be sure to weigh all of your options and the costs carefully before deciding to get hair extensions.

When you decided to get a dog, I’ll bet you daydreamed about the great times you’d have with your new best friend. However, there are many things that you need to consider in order to keep your pooch happy and healthy. Things that perhaps you’d rather not even think about!

When you go to the veterinarian he may ask you to bring along a urine sample from your dog. How do you do this? Your dog surely won’t be able to hit a sample bottle. The easiest way to accomplish this is to tape a polythene container to the end of a yard stick. While your dog is out doing his business, position the container underneath his urine stream. This is easier to do with male dogs than female dogs but you can usually get a sample with one or two tries. Your veterinarian will want as fresh a sample as possible so if you won’t be taking the sample to the vet right away, keep it refrigerated until you bring it in. Your veterinarian will be checking the sample for a variety of things like bacteria and crystals. If bacteria is found it could mean that your dog has a urinary tract infection and will most likely require your dog to be put on a course of antibiotics. Crystals form in the urine whenever minerals bind together, there are several different kinds of crystals and these are most often treated with prescription diets.

If your veterinarian asks for a stool sample it could mean that he suspects that intestinal parasites are bothering your dog. They can get these by eating fecal matter from another affected animal, carcasses, or other unsavory things. You will want to bring in a fresh sample. The doctor will examine it under the microscope and look for telltale eggs of parasites. Commonest parasites are roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Several of today’s monthly heartworm medications also protect against roundworms and hookworms. If you live in the country or your dog is outside for much of the day, he may need to be treated with a tapeworm wormer on a quarterly basis. Other diseases like coccidia, can also be seen under the microscope from your dog’s stool sample.

What about anal glands? The anal glands are two small glands located just on the inside of your dog’s anus that secrete a foul smelling liquid. Usually the glands will be emptied when your dog defecates. Unfortunately, in some dogs, the anal glands become impacted and do not empty properly. If your dog is urinating more than usual or licking his hind quarters more often, there may be a problem with his anal glands. In this case it’s important to make an appointment with your veterinarian who will check the anal glands by gloved touch. If the anal glands are full, he will be able to empty them manually. it is possiblen, however, to learn how to do this yourself at home. Some dogs require their anal glands be manually emptied regularly. Some owners have their dog’s anal glands surgically removed but if you choose to do this, discuss the possible outcomes with your veterinarian as there is often a risk of fecal incontinence if the surgery goes awry.

Occasionally in dogs, dandruff is just dandruff caused by skin allergies, nutritional deficiencies, or improper grooming. Sometimes, however, dandruff can be a sign of a parasite called mange of which there are a few different types:

a) Demodectic Mange is caused by a mite which all dogs have but are rarely adversely affected by it. Sometimes however, there can be an overabundance of these mites which causes skin irritation and hair loss.

b) Sarcoptic Mange (also known as scabies) is caused by another type of mite. A female mite buries herself in the dog’s skin and lays her eggs there. When the eggs hatch, the cycle begins again. This causes severe skin irritation and hair loss in dogs but is easily treatable.

c) Cheyletiella Mange is caused by a large mite that lives on the surface of the dog’s skin. This infestation is also known as ‘walking dandruff’. This type of mange causes minor skin irritation but is easily treatable with topical medication.

So, now you can talk about those unpleasant things! It’s important that you are properly educated and can recognize signs and symptoms so that you keep your dog as healthy as he can be.

Well actually three words, color, color, color!!! I remember the world renowned, salon owner and entrepreneur, John Amico, once told me he is HAPPILY married, Never cheats on his wife, yet he comes home with 5 different women a year! How does he do it? With color (he colors his wife’s hair 4-5 times a year) and he says each time show looks like a
new woman!!!

One of the keys to looking “stunning” with color is getting colors that blend well with your eyes and your skin tone. When this occurs your hair color(s) will not look so “man made-ish” and the hair color(s) you choose will not only compliment you, but also look very natural.

When taking color into consideration keep in mind there are different “types” to choose from. You have temporary, semi-permanent, demi-permanent, and permanent hair color.

*Temporary Hair Color- is just that, temporary. It is good to use if your permanent color ever starts to fade, between your color appointments.

*Semi-Permanent Hair Color- was created to last anywhere from 6 - 8 shampoos. I must admit that some product lines are stronger than this and I have witnessed a few semi-permanent colors almost as strong as some permanent hair color(s).

*Demi-Permanent Hair Color- was designed to be gentle on the hair. This would be an excellent option for African American women wanting color (and currently relaxing their hair). Even though they do not lighten hair, they can become permanent, so keep in mind that shampooing your hair will not remove demi-permanent hair color.

*Permanent Hair Color: will permanently change the natural color of your hair by either making it lighter or darker.

There are also different factors to take into consideration as well, when choosing your hair color. Like:

*The season. The colors that look best on you inlet’s saythe spring, will not look the best on you…during wintertime.

*How “drastic” of a change you want to make. The farther you go from your natural color, the more the color will be noticed.

*All over color, vs. highlights. Living in Florida, there is no question which one I love the best…(you guessed it) highlights!!!

Hair Care Professional- Breaking One In

Beauty Salon- It is so important for us to find the right beauty salon so that we can have the right look at the right time. However, there are certain things that beauty salon owners don’t want you to know.

According to the September 13, 2005 issue of the LA Times, soon after Hurricane Katrina passed through the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama beauty salons with power and water reopened. Women who had lost EVERYTHING flocked to those open beauty salons. They wanted to look good even though they did not have a place to live. They wanted and needed professional hair care.

This fact alone confirms your intuition about the absolute necessity of finding the right beauty salon. This holds true for a beauty salon Santa Monica, or a beauty salon Long Beach, Mississippi.

Let me give you some general guidelines and tips to use when you are looking for a new beauty salon. I will also include some helpful suggestions about how to deal with your hair stylist.

1. How far is the beauty salon from your home or work? Is it convenient to either or both?

2. Telephone the salon. Ask if their hair care stylists have experience with your type of hair. For example, is your hair long, curly, textured or exposed to frequent changes to hair color, heat and the elements?

3. Search the Internet for reviews of beauty salons in your work or home zip codes.

4. It seems obvious, but it’s crucial: Who do you know whose hair looks fabulous? Ask them where (and to whom) they go.

5. When you get to the beauty salon what does the atmosphere FEEL like to you? Is it peaceful or stressful? Which do you prefer?

6. Are you greeted right away or are you forced to wander around or “twiddle your thumbs” until someone attends to you?

7. If you’ve made an appointment is it kept?

8. Is the beauty salon clean and well organized? Does everything seem to be in its place?

9. How is the staff dressed? Are they dressed appropriately to your taste?

10. What does the hair of the staff look like to you? Is the hair of the staff professionally done or is it sloppy?

Ok, you’ve decided that the beauty salon environment is satisfactory, now how do you deal with the hair stylist?

11. Collect and bring pictures that are appropriate for your type of hair. The biggest beauty salon hair disasters occur when your hair stylist doesn’t understand what you want. Pictures help convey your message.

12. Don’t immediately go for a cut, take it slower. Book a blow-dry with your selected stylist. Ask, if you were to cut my hair, how would you do it? Once you’ve set aside the time for a real consultation, here are some key questions to ask yourself as you talk to your stylist:

DO YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE with the hair care stylist? You should like his or her sense of style. This means clothing, grooming, personality, everything.

IS THE STYLIST ASKING YOU questions, giving ideas and suggestions that relate to your personality, rather than pointing to a style on the wall or in a book?

IS THE HAIR CARE STYLIST ADDRESSING the health of your hair, not just proposing to cut off split ends? The two of you should be talking about conditioners and rinses that enhance shine and bounce, and special treatments that can prevent or repair damage done by the environment, such as pollution, sun, chlorine, humidity, or dry air.

ONCE YOU’VE AGREED ON A LOOK, does the stylist preview how you’ll need to blow it dry, wash it, and maintain it? These are all things to think about before actually getting the cut.

If you can answer most of the questions to your satisfaction, then you’ve probably found a beauty salon and a hair stylist that will make you look fabulous. If you cannot, then move on to the next beauty salon on your list.

In this article I’ll share with you my 5 easy tips to get rid of dandruff

1. Try vinegar. Pour vinegar into your hair and massage it all the way through for a couple of minutes. Then leave it dry for a few more minutes. Then wash your hair as normal. Do this everyday for a few days until your dandruff is gone. It should be gone in a few days.

2. A prescription steroid lotion might be the best bet. Steroid lotions can sometimes be the most popular treatment for dandruff.

3. Consider changing your diet. Try to cut out foods that are processed and high in hydrogenated fats. Increase your intake of omega-3 fatty acids by eating wild cold-water fish, freshly ground flax seeds, walnuts, fortified eggs, and leafy green vegetables. Trying to avoid dairy products may help you.

4. Try hypnosis! Believe it or not, sometimes skin conditions respond to hypnosis! So consider seeing a hypnotherapist experienced in treating them. Try here to find a hypnotherapist in your area (www.asch.net/referrals.asp).

5. See a Dermatologist. In some cases a scalp disease coule be the cause of severe dandruff. When this happens you should definetely make an appointment to see your dermatologist. Try here to find one in your area http://www.aad.org/public/searchderm.htm

Dogs should be kept on a regular schedule of washing. This is important to prevent skin and odor problems. It is also important to use a dog shampoo because it is formulated for a dog’s skin. Here are some steps to follow when it comes to washing your dog.

Make sure to use a shampoo that is for dogs and if you have a puppy, get a shampoo that is for puppies. People shampoo is just not right for dogs. It can dry out the dog’s skin. A dog’s skin is much different than that of people skin.

For puppies and small dogs, it is best to wash them in the sink or bathtub. Make sure to use warm water and not hot water or cold water. This will be much more comfortable for the dog and make it a more pleasant experience.

Brushing or combing prior to the bath will help remove tangles and matts in the dog’s hair or fur. This is a good idea because the tangles will become impossible to remove after the bath. Also placing cotton balls in the dogs ears will help to keep them dry.

The frequency of washing depends on the climate and breed of the dog. Generally speaking dogs should be washed once a week during the summer, once every two to three weeks in the spring and fall, and about once a month in the winter. This schedule is meant for healthy dogs and may vary if your dog has skin or health problems. It is best to check with your veterinarian if this is the case.

Begin your dog’s bath by gradually wetting the dog’s coat. Make sure the coat is sufficiently saturated and then apply enough dog shampoo to achieve a good foaming lather. Gently massage the shampoo into the coat. Only shampoo the dog’s head if necessary. Make sure not to get the dog shampoo in the eyes or ears.

Once you have achieved a good lather, rinse the coat very thoroughly and REPEAT with clean water. With your hands squeeze the water out of your dog’s coat. Lift or remove your dog from the tub and towel dry. You can also use a hair dryer to complete the drying. Make sure to comb and brush the hair as it dries especially if your dog has long hair. This will help prevent knots.

If your dog has a strong body odor, try thoroughly washing and rinsing. If this does not correct the problem, your dog probably has a skin problem. If this is the case, you should seek the care and advice of your veterinarian.

Many dog owners are reluctant to wash their dog regularly due to concern over removing natural oils from the skin and coat. Actually, many skin problems come from insufficient washing.

Regular washing is part of a good hygiene program for your dog. Since dogs cannot bathe themselves, it is up to us dog owners to take on this responsibility.

1. Mornings are right for showers. Let’s face it. When the alarm jolts you out of your dream just as you were getting to the good part, you’re not exactly ready to face the day. Scraping the chunks of junk from your eyes as you stumble to the bathroom to try and make yourself look presentable before you go out and meet the world demands action.

And action is what showers deliver.

From the moment you step in and feel the spraying water needling your body your blood begins to flow. Grabbing your washcloth and soaping yourself up feels like an aerobic workout that burns calories and pumps adrenalin through your system so you can meet whatever challenges you may face head on.

2. Showers can conserve water. How many times have you, or your significant other, overslept only to find the shower already in use by the other significant other? In battlefield conditions (and these certainly qualify) it’s wise to share a shower, not only to save time, but to save the planet’s water supply for your children.

3. Showers cut down on oversleeping. Imagine waking up in the condition specified earlier and instead of stepping into a jet spray of water you slipped into a frothy tub of warm water. Instead of vigorously soaping and scrubbing and shaving and shampooing, you close your eyes and listen to the slight snapping of the suds around you Just try getting up and going to work after that.

4. Showers let you start the day clean. While there’s nothing quite like a good, hot bath, the last thing you want first thing in the morning is to soak in a pool of last night’s filth. Showers automatically rinse as you wash so the grime goes down the drain making for a much cleaner you as you go about your day.

5. Have you ever heard of someone singing in the bathtub?

6. In relation to number 5 the shower is perfect for the mornings because showers are all about work. Scrubbing, shaving, shampooing, rinsing, conditioning, rising again are all designed to get your mind ready for the workday by making you work first thing in the morning. Think about how many great ideas or inventions were discovered in the shower.

7. And last, but not least, reduced cleanup. After bathing there’s almost always a nasty ring of scum around the tub that needs to be taken care of before it sets up. And depending on what you do in the tub there can be other bits of flotsam stuck in there as well. Showers neatly wash everything away leaving you more time in the morning for that extra cup of coffee with your significant other.

So it’s easy to see that, while there’s nothing inherently wrong with a nice bath, the mornings are for showers because showers are for workers.

Hair Loss Stress Triggers

It is not surprising that one of the major factors leading to hair loss stems from stress. Extreme stress can affect several aspects of one’s life and health, including causing hair If you suspect that stress is triggering your hair loss, then you will have to make changes in your lifestyle; otherwise you may well end up with bald patches on your head.

Stress can be triggered externally or internally. External situations come from the environment. Internal factors are linked to emotional responses such as depression, grief or resistance to change. If this stress is continuous and is not solved, it will begin to affect the way in which the body reacts.

Hair loss will often result as a reaction to the way in which stress impacts the balance in your body. When stress begins to take place in your body, the hormonal balance in your body is upset. There may be an excess production of hormones which may then go into the scalp area and causing your hair to fall out. Usually, this hair loss will be noticeable after two to four months. You will be able to identify the hair loss by the thinning of your hair, bald spots or more hair falling out than usual.

To manage stress, you can use a variety of relaxation ways. Meditation techniques can be used to help you let go of daily problems. Massage therapy and going on a vacation are other ideas that you can adopt. You can also work on changing dietary habits and exercising regularly. If the problems are more external or related to a life-changing situation, there are a variety of places that will help you in working through the problem.

Hair loss due to stress triggers can be stopped pretty easily and quickly once you control your stress and ease the pressures that you face. Take comfort that hair loss is usually not permanent in these cases and hair tends to grow back after stress is reduced. When you eliminate stress, the hormonal balance in your body is restored and production of particular nutrients is back at normal levels. In conclusion, it is important to get help and support quickly before hair is not lost completely.

There are two main dandruff dilemmas. The first one of course effects the person who is experiencing it, or the parent or loved one of that person. Our first reaction is its cause, and maybe more importantly, how to get rid of it.

The second dilemma is experienced by big business. They produce and sell products to alleviate the symptoms. But think about it, if their products were a cure, they would not have much repeat business.

Shampoo is a perfect example. Active ingredients such as zinc pyrithione and salicylic acid are added to the most popular shampoos. While both of these ingredients are excellent for treatment, they simply aren’t in contact with the scalp long enough to be of any real effect. Not to mention most of these shampoos give your hair an unhealthy dried out look.

For our purposes here, I will focus on the first dilemma, and let big business worry about their own problems!

Here’s the problem. Most people simply don’t know what to do short of buying popular products, or going to the time and expense of visiting a dermatologist. Here’s the good news. You don’t have to visit a dermatologist to receive as effective dandruff treatment. Dermatologist frequently prescribe medications which remain on the scalp overnight. There are however, hair products you probably already use, except for the addition of active ingredients like zinc and salicylic acid which stay in continual contact with the scalp being formulated into them.

Along with active ingredients, I highly recommend products which include natural herbal ingredients. Check out this list of beneficial herbal ingredients and their qualities.

Zinc Pyrithione: Most widely used active ingredient used to treat dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, eczema and numerous other skin and scalp disorders. Synthesized in the 1930’s, has strong anti-fungal and anti-bacterial properties.

Salicylic Acid: Naturally found in willow tree bark. Key additive in many skin care products. Causes skin cells to slough off more readily keeping pores open.

Tea Tree Oil: Strongest known natural antiseptic. Also has punitive skin penetrating capacity as an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, germicide and fungicide. From the Australian plant Melaleuca Alternifolia.

Peppermint Oil: Natural properties include penetrating and anelgesic qualities.

Guava: Herbal anelgesic, anti-baterial, anti-fungal, and antiseptic.

Wild Cherry: Natural root bark extract astrigent.

Chamomile: Herbal anti-inflammatory.

Horsetail: Herbal storehouse of vitamins and minerals, revitalizing properties.

Nettle: Herbal anti-inflammatory, anti-histamine, rich in minerals.

Dandelion Extract: Natural allergen

Aloe Barbabenis: Natural anti-irritant

It may surprise many of my readers that most dandruff shampoo is actually harmful to your hair. While you may experience some moderate relief of your dandruff. It is usually short lived, and your hair actually ends up looking and feeling much worse. I would highly suggest that you choose one that will restore natural PH balance back to you scalp. I would also recommend it to be mild and include Tea Tree OIL and natural herbal ingredients.

The solution is not going to be in the shampoo entirely. At least not for the vast majority of people. They simply are not in contact with the scalp long enough to supply complete relief.

Living with dry skin and scalp has been a reality for me for most of my almost 50 years. I have researched remedies and have come across some who would even go so far as to advise the use of vinegar applied overnight on a regular basis. Now who in the world wants to sleep with vinegar in their hair!

So what would I recommend? How about products which have the beneficial ingredients in them, are easy to use, and smell great. What comes to mind you ask? How about styling gels and sprays which most of us use already? Wow, how simple is that. All we have to do is find styling sprays and gels which have the active and herbal ingredients formulated into them, and they will be in contact with our scalp each time we use them until we shampoo them off.

There are a very few available. But if you search online, I’m sure you will be able to find the ones which are right for you.
Just be sure they include many if not all of the ingredients I’ve listed above for maximum effectiveness.

Dandruff can be controlled, it just takes a better course of action than most common solutions provide.
